On his last day as an apex court judge, Justice Krishna Murari on Friday said that the Supreme Court was the embodiment of India’s diverse civilisation.
At a farewell ceremony organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, Justice Murari said that the apex court works to protect the arch of the Constitution, which in turn guards a nation.
“If our Constitution is the arch on the edifice of which our nation rests, then the Supreme Court is the key stone holding this Constitutional arch in place. All players will come and go, but this Supreme Court shall continue to function.”
In his speech, he mentioned that junior counsel should be encouraged to hone their courtcraft.
“I urge seniors to give ample opportunities to juniors. One can be a good lawyer, but all of them need a platform to showcase their talent. I always encouraged the younger members of the bar to argue.”
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud lauded Justice Murari’s calm demeanour and humility in court. He added that Justice Murari contributed immensely to service and and family law.
Attorney General for India R Venkataramani and Supreme Court Bar Association Adish Aggarwala also paid tribute to Justice Murari at the event.
Justice Murari studied law from Allahabad University and enrolled as an advocate on December 23, 1981. He began his practice at the Allahabad High Court, where he was appointed as an additional judge on January 7, 2004. He became a permanent judge in 2005, and in June 2018, he was elevated as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on September 23, 2019.
